To start, let's clear up a common misconception. Proofreading and editing are not interchangeable. Each word means very different things. Editing is something that is done to ensure that your writing is readable, appropriate for your audience, factually correct, concise, and that it sticks to the topic at hand. If somebody edits your paper, they might give you advice on where to cut things out, fixing inaccuracies, and changing your sentence structure to improve readability. Proofreading, on the other hand, is reviewing a paper for spelling, formatting, grammatical, and punctuation errors. Both tasks are very important, but we will be focusing on proofreading and online proofreading services.
